TitleRegimental Journals: The Roussillon Gazette
DescriptionThe Gazette contains notes on the proceedings of individual battalions and companies, reports of sporting events, accounts of ceremonial and memorial occasions, details of reunions, and so forth. It is also a rich source of information on the history of the Regiment and includes many articles and illustrations relating to the service of the Regiment and to the achievements of its most distinguished officers and men.
The series in this collection is complete, with the exception of a number of missing issues in the period 1920-1926, and a duplicate series is retained by The Royal Sussex Regimental Association. The series is not indexed, but there is a list of contents at the beginning of each issue. The volumes are bound unless otherwise stated.
Related MaterialAt various times in the past, individual battalions of The Royal Sussex Regiment produced their own journals or newsletters and these also contain articles of interest to the regimental historian. They include The Cinque Ports Gazette, a journal of the 5th (Cinque Ports) Battalion published first in 1916 (see RSR/MSS/5/87) and then again in 1930-1939 (RSR/MSS/5/100), and The Royal Sussex Herald, a journal of the 2/6th Battalion published in 1916-1919 (RSR/MSS/6/8 and 6/10).
AdminHistoryThe Roussillon Gazette was first published as a journal of The Royal Sussex Regiment in January 1910. It was initially produced by the 1st Battalion, but in 1925 the headquarters was moved to the Regimental Depot in Chichester. Publication was taken over by The Royal Sussex Regimental Association when the Regiment was absorbed by The Queen's Regiment in December 1966 and this body continues to produce the Gazette in the form of a newsletter.
In its original form the journal was published in four quarterly issues per year with each issue containing about 30 pages. The format was changed in 1928 and from then until 1939 the journal was produced in two larger issues, of 60 to 80 pages, in May and November each year. After the Second World War, four quarterly issues, of about 25 pages, were produced each year, but in 1954 the system reverted to two issues, of 30 to 40 pages, in the Summer and Winter of each year. This method was continued by The Royal Sussex Regimental Association until 1970 when it was decided to publish only one issue, of 30 to 50 pages, in the Autumn of each year. In 1978 economic pressures resulted in a major alteration in format, and from this date the Gazette has been published as an annual Winter newsletter of 12 pages.
