Short title | VE Day street party, Sandfield Avenue, Lyminster, Wick near Littlehampton |
Full description | VE celebrations, Sandfield Avenue, Lyminster. A street party is held to celebrate Victory in Europe Day which marked the end of the Second World War in Europe. Children sit on chairs at a long table in the centre of the street and adults stand behind them. Everyone is looking towards the camera. The table is decorated with flowers and all the children have plates and bottles of drink in front of them. At the far end of the table a man stands on a high structure, he could be an entertainer as there appear to be loud speakers next to him. There are also two clowns with hats on the ground in front of him. The street is decorated with union flags and bunting. Marked with the blue square are Ernest and Kathleen Harrington (nee Stone) and in front of them sits their son Colin Harrington. Next to them Joyce Manwaring nee Peskett holds her son Roger Manwaring. Bryan Saunders is second up on the left and Maureen McMaster nee Saunders is the blonde girl fifth up on the right. Phyllis Tate is the woman in the stripy top on the left. Jill Beevis nee Pierce is the girl on the end with her arm over the back of the chair and her brother Mick is on her right. Also thought to be in the photograph are brothers Brian and Tony Burchfield plus Maureen Tate nee Wells. Loaned by Colin Harrington's cousin Leigh Lawson. Leigh's mother and her sisters lived with Joyce's parents (who ran Lyminster Stores by the level crossing), and in a rented cottage in Mill Lane, off and on during the war. |
